Massaging Terror
On September 24th Mr Sharaa addressed the UN General Assembly, the first Syrian leader to do so in almost 60 years. Impressive! What a great guy he must be, to be celebrated by our actual “rules-based” Western powers and welcomed in New-York.
September 22, at the Concordia Annual Summit in New York, the self-proclaimed “interim” Syrian President was interviewed by the former US general who had him imprisoned from 2006 to 2011.
David Petraeus led American forces during the invasion of Iraq and later became the director of the CIA. His former al-Qaeda prisoner became a deputy of ISIS to then form al-Nusra in Syria, AKA al-Jolani then, he had a $10 million bounty on his head by the U.S. as leader of the Syrian militant group Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham, until he took over Syria in December 2024. Now groomed, the Islamic State In Suit commander (as Max says) strikes a better impression. Suddenly he’s shaking hands with EU delegations and leaders, meeting Saudi Crown prince MBS and Trump himself who calls him “an attractive, tough guy”.
Petraeus said his discussion with the former Al-Qaeda commander in Iraq and Syria “has filled [him] with enormous hope.” “Your vision is powerful and clear. Your demeanor is very impressive as well … We obviously hope for your success, Inshallah, because at the end of the day, your success is our success”.
Petraeus is known for his sycophantic remarks. CENTCOM Commander Adm. William J. Fallon (Petraeus’s superior) opposed Petraeus’s agreement to be the front salesman for the George W. Bush administration’s policy of increasing U.S. troop strength in Iraq to Congress. The Admiral called him “an ass-kissing little chickensh*t”.
And so, here we have the former jailer fawning over his former terrorist prisoner’s impressive accomplishments, which, under his benevolent presidency still include head chopping and other atrocities, for the better good of the empire.
David Petraeus even showed concern for the Syrian leader’s personal well-being, asking whether he is getting enough sleep. David said al-Sharaa has “many fans” and that he is one of them. Quite a Four-Star Massage!
“We cannot judge the past based on the rules of today and cannot judge today based on the rules of the past,” said the Syrian “interim” president.
A former ISIS commander gets the red carpet treatment now. Well, for anyone who didn’t get it yet, why would the Rules-Based Order celebrate the all in black thugs it was supposed to destroy? After thirteen years, Assad had to flee, Syria is being balkanized, the food producing region and most oil fields are under US control, and the link between Lebanon and Iran through Syria and Iraq is now broken. There’s also a pipeline project in the pipes, that Assad rejected… Now, reports indicate that these useful bad hombres are being prepared against Lebanon.
Somehow, it wasn’t much of a big story. It exemplifies hybrid warfare so well that it was a caricature in itself. The irony and cynicism are so extreme, it deserved at least a cartoon.
A former CIA director falls in love with a former terrorist turned president. Hollywood couldn’t dream up a better success love story (it might even deserve a Five Stars rating).
